Lidl (full name Lidl Stiftung & Co.) is a supermarket based in Neckarsulm, Germany, which specialises in discount groceries and household products. It is named after one of the founding partners, Ludwig Lidl. After he left the company, his business partner’s son, Dieter Schwarz, bought the company name for 1000 marks. He would have liked to have named it Schwarz Markt, after himself, however, Schwarzmarkt in German means ‘Black Market’ and he thought this would cause people to associate negativity with the business. The stores came to the UK in 1994, and there are currently over 580 stores in this country alone. The products they sell differ in comparison to competitor Aldi, with more affordable gourmet foods imported from Europe. They also stock more products which are sourced from within the country in which the store is located.
